There are some good tutorials for Apophysis here on DA and the program can be downloaded for free here. I use Ultra Fractal, which has free trials available for download. The main difference with the trial version is that you can't render high resolution files. The program comes with some really good tutorials.

wow the patterns remind me of the patterns on a peacock.
very cool colours to combine, just not to sure about the brownish red colour.

I'm not sure about it either. That brownish red is a result of the purple being placed next to the green in the gradient, so the middle point gave me that muddy color.
